THE GREATER SEATTLE AREA CHAPTER OF NACE PRESENTS:
Swirl • Smell • Savor
An Evening Dedicated to Wine at Novelty Hill Januik • Winery

|
Winemaker Mike Januik doesn’t think it’s essential you know he was named one of the world’s ten “Masters of Merlot” by Wine Enthusiast magazine. He’d be the last to tell you he’s had more than a dozen wines appear on Wine Spectator’s prestigious “Top 100” list. He doesn’t think you’d be interested to know he was the head winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle for ten years before leaving to start Januik Winery in 1999 or that he’s been making wine in the Columbia Valley since 1984. He’s more impressed with a good University of Oregon football team.
Mike is one of Washington’s most acclaimed winemakers, but he’d rather you taste his wine and decide what you think of his winemaking for yourself. Therefore, we are excited to open up our doors and welcome you to join us for an evening dedicated to learning about great wine and great food. Set between the large Tasting and Terrace Rooms, this reception style event will allow you to explore and experience various aspects of wine.
Wine Tasting and Pairing: varietals will be paired with creations from our Chef as well as selections from our cheese and charcuterie display that can be copied at home.
Winery Tours Illustrating the Journey from the Vine to the Bottle: led by Mike Januik, learn the story of how he turns a red and white grape into an artisan wine. Tour features the crush and press pad, tank and production room, barrel room and bottling line.
Chef Demonstrations and Discussions: Le Cordon Bleu trained, Executive Chef Dan Koommoo will be preparing the evening’s menu from our demonstration kitchen. He will be answering questions and demonstrating various techniques that fuse wine and food together.
Exploring the Nose and Bouquet of a Wine: have you wondered what it means to get ‘ripe fig’ from the nose of a wine? Have you thought you tasted the ‘blackberry’ but weren’t quite sure? We will have these and other items available for you to smell and sample, followed with wines demonstrating those sensory characteristics.
If weather permits, enjoy your wine in our extensive Gardens by one of our two outdoor fireplaces. Or, enjoy some friendly competition at our Bocce Ball Court.

About Novelty Hill - Januik Winery
Novelty Hill and Januik are two independently owned wineries that share a tasting room and production facility in Woodinville. Mike Januik makes the wine for both Novelty Hill and Januik labels. Novelty Hill relies primarily on grapes from its estate vineyard, Stillwater Creek. Januik wines are made from a collection of top-flight Columbia Valley vineyards.
Novelty Hill • Januik Winery is a unique, upscale destination open to guests from 11 a.m. 5 p.m. daily. Explore the art and science of winemaking through reserve tastings, educational seminars and culinary events. Entertain your family, friends and business associates in one of our exclusive private event rooms. To complete the experience, an in-house culinary team lead by Chef Dan Koommoo is dedicated to fresh cuisine from sustainable resources, including organic fruits and vegetables from nearby Oxbow Farm.
The building’s contemporary design and surrounding gardens celebrate wine’s agrarian roots and the artistry of fine winemaking. The rhythm and geometries of the agricultural landscape, along with the patterns of wine production, shape the architecture and landscape of the winery. Mithun, an interdisciplinary firm of architects, designers, and planners, in collaboration with Katherine Anderson, established a linear logic drawing on both the linear rows of grapes in a vineyard and the rows of tanks in a winery that guides the design of the entire facility. Both the AIA and the International Interior Design Association honored the winery’s interior architecture with prestigious awards announced in 2008.
The winery boats a long resume of green practices in it’s dedication to preserving, protecting and enhancing the natural wetlands and native environment surrounding the building. A short list of these items include: Low VOC components, energy efficiency with lighting labs and energy programming, a Salmon Safe certified vineyard and practices to ensure the day to day use of the facility not only protects the environment but enhances it as well.
